What would you do 13
You are sitting at your desk in your Martial Arts Studio.
A man comes in the front door.
Before you can say much, he does something quite unusual.
He pulls a knife and asks what you do here.
What would you do?

To All,
My apologies for not posting on this thread sooner.
I got caught up in the other threads.
I also have a life outside all of this.
Anyway, here are my responses.
And I am interested in the responses of others.
What I would do 9
About the guy off the T.V.
My response,
I’d back the car up or drive off to a safe distance.
At that point, I’d be able to decide if I could talk or not.
If I thought I could not talk reasonably, I’d drive off.
What I would do 10
About being grabbed from behind.
My response
This is a true life experience from one of my neighbors, back in the day.
He was taught TKD but his responses were what mine were then.
When I was attacked from behind, I tend to hit first and so did he.
It was too bad he hit a policeman who had lost sight of his suspect.
My neighbor did 6 months in lock-up for this.
I changed the way I teach defense from a grab from behind.
Now I teach to move away before turning and adopt a defensive stance.
What would I do 11
About a belligerent panhandler
My response
This happened to me just as I had started training in Moh.
I must confess that it was not my most shining moment.
I stepped into the guy and smacked him.
Then I looked around,
At his 2 friends who had me bracketed.
This is something I should have been doing before I engaged.
Actually, I should not have engaged him at all.
I should have kept walking and that is what I teach.
Fortune smiled on me that day.
The mouthy one I’d smacked did not want anymore of me.
And his friends, did not want trouble.
So we all smiled and said, “what the heck”.
And I walked away unharmed (I got lucky).
What would I do 12
About the enraged tenant
My response
I saw this but it happened outside my apartment but I was not part of it.
On other occasions, when people have rushed me,
I used to hesitate and this would get me hurt.
Now I defend myself with all necessary force.
But it took being crippled up for 2 weeks to bring this home to me.
I would have others learn quicker and better than me.
What would I do 13
About the knife wielding prospective student
My response
This happened to my predecessor in the Surrey studio in the late 19 70’s.
T.D. was a very tough man and a tough minded individual.
But he did come across as laid back, at first.
When it happened, he never flicked an eye.
He told the fellow that he (T.D.) taught self defense.
The fellow left quietly after that.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to some of these. it is kind of different to do an intenet scenario like this. But hey Why not.
The Attack
Suddenly, the front door 3 feet away from you flies open.
Four thugs wielding machetes, charge in.
Immediately an attacker with a machete tries to decapitate you.
You are not armed and there is no warning.
What would I do. This question, in one form or another, came to me a few years ago. And blade attacks are on the rise. Almost everyone the police take in to custody ( at least where i live) are packing blades. And just recently there was an attack with a samurai sword.
Now what I am about to say is strictly my opinion ( and please remember I am for moo kempo not against )
Moo kempo, as with many arts, does not sufficienlty train people in the area of self defense against a bladed attack. Chances are very good you will die or be irreversably injured. one cut can kill. Never mind 4 men with machette's. I say take up filipino arts , combine it with moo kempo ( or whatever you train) and pray for a miracle.
But I will respond to the scenario, and assume my prayer was answered and i have been given a miracle because otherwise what i am about to say would have to otherwise be considered wacko. First thing i would do is wait for attacker #1 to strike ( you see, my prayer was answered and these guys are amateurs and will attack in sequence) as he strikes I would use a block to the inside of his forearm and headbutt him att the same time. Grabbing his wrist I would preform a disarm using his own neck to disarm the machette, which severes his carotid artery and he falls to the ground dead or running for the door bleeding to death on the way out. I pick up the dropped weapon. As attacker # 2 moves in with an attack I block/cut with my blade ,cutting the flexor tendons in his wrist causing him to drop his blade, I then cut his quadracep muscles taking away his base for mobilty, then just for fun I roundhouse kick him in the head knocking him out ( hey, its my miracle) As attacker #3 attacks I again block ( this time blade to blade) estrella block lets say. grabbing his machette weilding wrist with my live hand, and following thru with my machette cutting his belly, spilling his entrails out onto the ground. However by this time I am starting to feel pretty cocky and decide I am not done with this guy yet. I preform a reverse grip disarming technique ending up with both machettes and chop both his arms off at the same time. And I yell out " KIAI" It has now become apparent to me that none of these guys have any experience with machettes whatsoever and I decide it is time to get serious. With attacker #4 getting ready to make his move, I drop both my machettes and pick up his friends arms which I just removed in my previous flurry. As attacker #4 makes his move I block the incoming attack with a traditional moo kempo rising block(but what do i care, its not my arm) and the block results in attacker #4 cutting his own buddies hand off. As the shock of cutting his buddies hand off is settling in, it gives me a moment to wind up and drop him with a right hook punch ( compliments of his buddies other arm ) which knocks him unconcious and I win the fight.
Sorry I got a bit carried away towards the end, but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

Mr E2ME2. here is another
What would you do?
You are at the local mall.
It is crowded and the parking lot is full.
Finally you pull into a free space.
As you get out, a man rushes up to you.
He claims you have stolen his space and demands it back.
For the purposes of this thread you say no, it is yours.
He steps forward and grabs both your jacket lapels.
What would you do?
Since both his hands are tied up, I would consider this a "minimum- medium threat". First I would check to make sure i was not in a hanicapp parking spot ( it could happen) second ( providing I am not in a handicapp spot)I would tell him to let go, thats only fair. if he does not i would ask him once more, i would count to five, ( at this point in time I would like to say head butt but since something similar to this this has happened to me I can tell you what I would do next) i grab onto him and push him up against the closest vehicle ( or wall), he lets go and takes a swing, I roundhouse kick his head into the wall( beacause thats what there was in my incident) and the threat is taken care of.

P.S. true story ( the grabbing and the roundhouse kick to the head with nothing but a wall to stop it I mean)

Hello Sifu Shawn,
I like your responses, L.O.L.!
I’m not going to say anything else because it might detract from them.

I am still picking away at these when I have time.

What would you do?
First of all I would try not to do anything or say anything to agravate him.
second, I would say to him"Is it not obvious? I am in the business of trading knives in for cash. And that blade, my fine sir , looks like its worth every penny I have on me."

What would you do 11
A tactical question
You are walking down a sunny downtown street.
There is some foot traffic.
You see some guys loitering on the corner ahead.
One of them calls out and asks for change.
He does this in a belligerent manner.
(He is an aggressive panhandler.)
You say, ‘no, sorry’ or some such.
You aren’t rude, just business like.
He moves towards you and calls you a liar.
What is the first thing you do?
I generally try to avoid groups of people who are loitering, I tend to be on the defensive quite a bit. To many people getting beaten here where I live.
If he called me a liar, I dont know. It would depend on what kind of a day was having right up to that point. I mean it doesn't hurt to call me a liar.. And I do actually usually cary a bit of cash with me, so the guy is actually right, I am a liar.. So if I was feeling relaxed I would probably say "no dude I dont have any cash on me but have a nice day, my freind" And walk away.
Or if I had a really bad day at work ( which is how I earn my money) I might tell him he's right , that I do have money on me and its mine. If he needs some cash go get a job.
The city that I live in is growing rapidly right now. We have a lot of transients and a lot of panhandlers. they usually dont loiter together on corners though , they are on there own holding up a sign "HOMELESS AND NEED CASH" kind of a deal. I have been asked frequently for cash. i just tell them no, and thats usually it. No problems.
I guess if they took offense to this and decided to try and rob me then I would have to defend myself. Hopefully I never have to have that happen. Something about hammering on a homeless person, just doesnt sit well with my morality chip.

Hello Sifu Shawn,
As I said, I like your witty response to the knife wielder.
As for the street people I encountered as a young(er) man.
It was a different time (1977).
The concept of “homeless” had not taken hold in Edmonton.
More, Edmonton winters are VERY cold and I don’t believe these guys were up for that.
They were just feeling their oats and looking for some quick cash.
When I have had to do this later on in my life, I just say no.
If they have a nasty response, I ignore it.
But that day the god of fools must have been looking out for me.
For what I did left me in a tactically disadvantages position.
Nor could I have defended myself in court easily (if it had come to that).
I just got lucky! :-D

To all,
This is a “what would you do?” that I asked my teacher, long ago.
In the old Vancouver studio office, a pair of ceremonial weapons hung upon the wall. The office was small and overcrowded. It was a case of too
much stuff in too small a space.
One day I asked my instructor what he’d do against an armed assailant in
this tiny space. It was so small; there just wasn’t any room to move about.
He smiled and smacked the wall upon which the weapons hung.
As they fell he reached out and caught one, while the other fell behind
him.
That quickly, he was armed and ready.
