That is an awesome link... but where did I put it up? This may be a totally redundant question but I am feeling a bit stupid about this... I don't remember posting or seeing that web page before...

Yen Hui- 09-19-2006

Well, I'm successfully mystified, 'cause on my PC Monitor Screen, I see this Banner (Ad?) at the top of your Forum Webpage: Shaolin Chin Na Fa www.shaolin-kung-fu-library.com Naturally, I just assumed you hung it up there, and I'm a little amazed to find out you're not the one who did. Now I'd like to know how it got there, too!

Ahhhhh, now I understand. Those are ads that come with the forum (remember this forum is free). The forum template automatically generates ad's based on the theme of the forum. MA forum, MA ad's simple as that.

just another wish list
Hello Everyone ~ Some people like books, and some don't. I happen to be one who does, and I have a fairly long list of "must Haves", some of which I have posted in other threads. Here's another small list, which includes several that I've not yet recommended in a post. If there any that you are contemplating, and consider essential to any martial arts home library, feel free to add them to the list below. Hello Yen Hui, I do realize that the titles I am proposing are rather hardline here. None the less, I have found them interesting and diverting. I recommend them for reading, even if I don’t follow all their tips. “The Book of Five Rings” by Myamoto Musashi (This hardcover is the version that I prefer.) http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000C9MMSC/sr=1-9/qid=1161509160/ref=sr_1_9/102-5031211-2457748?ie=UTF8&s=books “Korean Karate: Free Fighting Techniques (Hardcover)” by S. Henry Cho http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000HD3XOU/sr=1-4/qid=1161509315/ref=sr_1_4/102-5031211-2457748?ie=UTF8&s=books In my opinion, this is a classic especially regarding position play. Then, believe it or not, I like this, “Complete Idiot's Guide to Karate (Paperback)” by Randall G. Hassell, Edmond Otis (The title is hokey but the material is lively and interesting…at a basic level.) http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Karate-Randall-Hassell/dp/0028638328/sr=1-8/qid=1161509708/ref=sr_1_8/102-5031211-2457748?ie=UTF8&s=books “What is Karate” by Mas Oyama http://www.amazon.com/What-karate-Masutatsu-O%cc%84yama/dp/B0007E52VQ/sr=1-50/qid=1161510051/ref=sr_1_50/102-5031211-2457748?ie=UTF8&s=books Regards, MrE2Me2

“What is Karate” by Mas Oyama hi there MrE2Me2 ~ Those are some good picks you put-up. I was looking at Mas Oyama's and noticed it is claiming quite a good resale "out-of-print" price, which speaks volumes about its relative merit. I agree that 'The Book of Five Rings' should be in all private martial arts home libraries. For all Karate enthusiasts, I'd also recommend The Bible of Karate. It's a great text! Take a peak at the TABLE OF CONTENTS. Very impressive, indeed!!! I'm sure the Idiot's Book is of very great practical value, but, to me, it's title is very unfortunate. In other words, it was a very bad business decision. Idiot's don't do well at kung-fu and it is a bad way to think of oneself. Winners practice kung-fu (karate), not idiots or dummies. We must begin with the end in mind: that is, see ourselves for the masters that we are, in regard to the real human potential of all men and women. Thanks a bunch for the excellent contribution to this thread. It's deeply appreciated! I've supplemented the above list with another selection of titles below. May your back heal-up quickly, but in the mean-time, you might find you have more time to devote to the philosophical side of the art. Perhaps some specialized reading, with a particular focus. Perhaps Chi Kung? B.K. Frantzis has an excellent book on that subject, entitled Opening Your Energy Gates. He is quite an amazing personality, actually, and I think that when you take the time to read up on his background, you will be nothing short of impressed, as I am! I say that with all honesty! He had quite a successful career in martial art competitions, and then one day very seriously injured his back, so that it was extremely doubtful he'd be able to continue in the martial arts, let alone live a normal life! Well, I'll let you search out the rest for yourself. That's part of the fun! Many kind regards, as usual! Four More "Must Have" Karate Treasures!!
“What is Karate” by Mas Oyama hi there MrE2Me2 ~ Those are some good picks you put-up. I was looking at Mas Oyama's and noticed it is claiming quite a good "out-of-print" resale price, which speaks volumes about its relative merit. I agree that 'The Book of Five Rings' should be in all private martial arts home libraries. For all Karate enthusiasts, I'd also recommend The Bible of Karate. It's a great text! Take a peak at the TABLE OF CONTENTS. Very impressive, indeed!!! 01 - Karate-Do: My Way of Life =>=>=> BOOK DESCRIPTION !!! Trained in the Confucian classics, he was a schoolteacher early in life, but after decades of study under the foremost masters, he gave up his livelihood to devote the rest of his life to the propagation of the Way of Karate. Under his guidance, techniques and nomenclature were refined and modernized, the spiritual essence was brought to the fore, and karate evolved into a true martial art. 02 - The Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate =>=>=> BOOK DESCRIPTION !!! Gichin Funakoshi, "the father of karate," once said that "the ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants." Reviews ~ 1 - "Whether or not you practice the martial arts, they make a great deal of sense, and will take you far, as a philosophy of life." -BookLoons Reviews 2 - "While focused on the practice and application of martial arts, this book's "pursuit of the way" has myriad applications for less physical forms of combat, work-related or otherwise" -Publishers Weekly 3 - "Filled with philosophical musings, fascinating historical episodes, and advice for anyone seeking a better way." -Rafu Shimpo 4 - "The Master insists on a training that involves both mind and body, to create a karate-do, a karate way." -Asian Week 5 - "This elegant book is a great treatise on the spiritual and mental aspects of traditional karate. Funakoshi, founder of the Shotokan School outlines the principles he felt exemplified the true spirit of karate. This is not "how to" book nor is it about technique. It is, however, an insightful easy read. I recommend it for those students who are interested in the deeper meaning of martial arts beyond just the techniques. I only wish it was longer." - Lawrence Kane, the Author of Surviving Armed Assaults, The Way of Kata, and Martial Arts Instruction 03 - Karate-Do Nyumon: The Master Introductory Text =>=>=> BOOK DESCRIPTION !!! Master Funakoshi begins by exploding some of the myths of Karate: "Karate-do is a noble martial art, and the reader can rest assured that those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or who boast of being able to perform outlandish feats like stripping flesh or plucking out ribs, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk." In his description of what Karate is, the Master describes the history of Karate -- its origins in the ancient methods of unarmed combat in China, and its growth as a fighting method in Okinawa, a country where arms were banned in a succession of decrees from the Japanese mainland. In order to prevent it being subjected to control, or more importantly, to prevent the Japanese overlords from knowing and using the techniques, the practice of Karate was kept a secret. 04 - Karate-Do Kyohan: The Master Text =>=>=> BOOK DESCRIPTION !!! This book, the most comprehensive and authoritative ever published, was being revised by the author shortly before his death in 1957, at the age of eighty-eight, and is translated for the first time. Through his advice on both practical and spiritual aspects of training, the master guides the student from techniques to the Way of karate.

Hello Yen Hui, Thanks for your kind words here. My back is healing up quickly and I’m due for some more treatments this week. So I’m on the mend! About your posts: I especially like the twenty guiding principles. And I also like the part where Funakoshi Sensei explodes a couple of silly myths. Regards, MrE2Me2
