How the name was changed to Temple Kung Fu I was there when the name was changed from Simon Kung Fu Studios to Temple Kung Fu.
This happened around 1980 or possibly 1981. It has been awhile and I have forgotten the exact dates.
I do remember the phone call, though but I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.
I was teaching for SKS in Surrey, B.C., at the time. My teacher was teaching in Vancouver. At that time, these were the only Moh Kempo studios that were open in B.C.
We in B.C. had recently broken off all affiliation with The Simons. My teacher had bought the rights to the name, “Simon”. So we continued to use it, as was our legal right.
Anyway, here I am at the studio when I get a call from what was then BCTV. The fellow wants to confirm something about the television advertisement that BCTV is going to run. I was surprised that we were doing this. I told the guy that I’d call him back.
I then called my teacher and expressed my excitement about the ad, He said, “I haven’t made an ad and I am not going to run one.” I passed on the BCTV representatives’ phone number to him.
Now this is what my teacher (at that time) told me happened afterward. He and his lawyer went to BCTV with their paperwork. This paperwork was all the proof that BCTV needed to put the ads on hold.
Sometime later I saw the Temple Kung Fu Studios commercial on T.V.

Awesome That's a great piece of history, thanks for the info.
Was your teacher at the time Mr. R. Terlecki?
Please PM on this if you don't want to make it public.
Thanks!

Hey Grasshopper,
Thank you for your comments.
Mr. R Terlecki was my senior classmate when we were in Edmonton a few years earlier. He wasn't my teacher.
As a matter of fact, shortly after the name change took place, the North Vancouver Studio opened its door for the first time. Mr, R. Terlecki was the, then, studio manager. My studio in Surrey was in competition with his, at that time. I actually visited him briefly then.
A couple of years ago I went and saw him again. It had been over 20 years and we had both mellowed. It was a very interesting conversation and I was pleased that it went well.
We are still on good terms, as far as I know.

Was the Tookien Temple around before or after the the name changed or was it's "ancient" roots first recorded in the 80's.

Hello TKF_PHS,
Your police training has stood you in good stead again.
You have reintroduced me to my friend, a little Miss Direction.
(From name change to name change, as it were.)
But before I tell what I remembered,
Please allow me to set the stage first.
It was back in the Edmonton studio around 1978.
I walked into the studio to train.
I would have been an orange belt.
I was also a KFC member.
I sat down and untied my shoes and removed them.
I got up and went to get changed for class.
I walked in during a conversation.
They were talking before I entered.
They continued talking while I got changed.
They were done when I got back.
The whole of what I heard took less than a minute.
What I heard was not directed at me.
I did not really care when I heard it then.
And later...well, later it was just one bad dream.
So I did not think about it at all.
Until I read your post tonight.
But I’ve teased you enough.
Phillip McAndrews was talking with Brian Leishman.
There were some other guys around him.
I’m gonna spell it like I heard it.
Phillip said (and I’m paraphrasing here).
“It isn’t the Shaolin temple; it’s the She-you-lin temple”.
“And it isn’t in fookien province; it’s next door in tookien.”
Like I said, I didn’t care before.
Probably why this didn’t come to mind earlier.
And I don’t care now.
I did not ask about it.
I don’t know where it came from or why it came up at all.
I always regarded the “Tales of Olaf” as part of the biz.
They were a good fantasy and every art I ever practiced, had them.)
(At that point I’d been studying martial arts since 1965.)
Take it for what it is worth.
I do and that ain’t much.
But then, neither is this “Tookien” fantasy (imho).

interesting post Mr E.

Thank you Current Student.
To all,
This is a tale about Olaf that was told to me by Wayne.
He was chief instructor for the Calgary studio at the time.
Everyone was leaving at the end of the day.
This included Wayne, Olaf and several other instructors.
They had just finished locking up the studio and then the front door.
As they turned to walk away, there was a sound from inside the studio.
It must have been a big sound for them to have heard it from outside.
Wayne was in his physical prime and processed catlike reflexes.
When he had finished his lighting turn, Olaf had already turned first.
And there Olaf Simon stood.
Poised, facing the locked front door, with revolver in hand.
Wayne never saw him draw it (or put it away either).
He never asked Olaf about it.
In fact, it was never spoken of (period).
BTW, a thorough search of the studio turned up nothing.
