This is pretty funny guys, remember all those clips we had on here awhile ago about the crazy qi power guys, well here is one that gets challenged and excepts. On the first link the video is about half way down the page and then watch the second link. Ryu-ken Yanagi, an Aikido Grandmaster in Japan famous for his Qi power: See his amazing Qi power over his students http://d.hatena.ne.jp/pencroft/20061110 ......and don't miss this ....... see how he did in a challenge match a few days ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQeUkUO5ZPo Nothing funny about seeing a guy get his face knocked in but you are right, after watching the first video clip that was damn hilarious!!

93 year-old Taoist master doing Ba Gua emptyhand and double sword http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr5vQm_i09I Elders doing unique Gong Lichuan hybrid of Taichi, Bagua, Eagle Claw, and Long Fist elements. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZovvU7pG-kM Old footage of Jow Ga master Hoy Lee doing double daggers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpbdOViIVZY I loved these clips! They made my day. Many thanks there swollenkuck! As for the Ki Master who suffered the defeat, well, that's a tough call to make. According to ancient Tradition, the ability to control the chi is entirely dependent upon entering the Tao, by effecting a state of central harmony. This means transcending all thought and emotion. According to this line of reasoning, the Ki Master failed to realize or actualize the Great Harmony, and therefore could not command the chi. Why, precisely, is a spiritual matter only the defeated master can explain! Kind regards, Yen Hui

Hello Swollenknuc, That vid of yours where the guy gets his face beat it. I thought he was supposed to be a practitioner of Aikido. And, well…uh…there is no first attack in Aikido. And his defenses definitely leave a lot to be desired. Here is a vid of a medieval style duel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnZYxeOyiV0 There is nothing in the way of tactics, distance maintenance of even basic conditioning. But these guys have all heart in the world. Your sig says, “Shedding more sweat in peace means less blood in war”. Would absolutely be the case here. Regards, MrE2Me2

In THE COMPLETE BOOK OF SHAOLIN, Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit tells the following true story, about himself, which is perfectedly illustrated for us in the video clip of the defeated (and disgraced, I should add,) Aikido master :- A LESSON ON THE TRUE SPIRIT OF SHAOLIN KUNG-FU Many years ago, when chi kung information was not as popularly assessable as it is today, my school and I were concertedly and publically challenged and ridiculed by some well known kung-fu and chi-kung masters, because, according to them, we were making arrogant and misleading claims like chi-kung could be used to relieve a wide range of diseases, chi-kung could enhance kung-fu performance, and chi could be transmitted over great distance. The validity of the above first two claims are now beyond doubt (they were also recorded in classical chi-kung and kung-fu texts, though these texts were kept as secrets), and a subsequent month-long public experiment conducted by a national newspaper on me confirmed that distance chi transmission is real. But at that time, I was personally insulted, suggesting that my claim to my Shaolin lineage was spurious, and that my students' demonstrations of chi-kung and kung-fu were faked. My inner disciples and I decided to take up a public challenge to a kung-fu contest, issued by an instructor from a famous kung-fu school. We intended to suggest a three-tier fight, with me as the grandmaster of my school meeting their grandmaster who was undoubtedly a highly accomplished kung-fu expert, three masters from our school meeting three of their masters, and our three students meeting their three students. We fancied it would probably be the fight of the decade, maybe of the century, for our school and theirs were the two best known in the region at that time. Looking back, I am glad that this fight of the century did not take place, because my master, Sifu Ho Fatt Nam, rushed from his retirement to instruct me to stop all preparations for the fight immediately. "But, Sifu," I tried to reason, "we sincerely believe we have at least 60 percent of winning." "That is precisely why you must stop. It would be better if you lose, for then that will be the end of the matter. You can be sure that if you win, and I have no doubt you can, there will be no end." "We are not fighting for any self-glory. In fact we know that even if we win, we may be injured, some even badly. But we were ready to sacrifice for the name and honor of our school." "Do not be silly and immature," my master said. "If an action brings harm to others but not to ourselves, we will not do it. Now we have an action that will bring harm to both others and to ourselves, yet you want to proceed." "But our honor is at stake," I said. "What honor?" "We have been accused of being fraudulent. We have been insulted publicly." "Were you really fraudulent?" "Of course not!" "Then the question of defending your honor does not arise. As the accusation is false, there is no need for you to defend. What you call 'honor' is just a 'false-name', an attachment to vainglory. Regarding what you call 'insults', you should, as taught by the Buddha, respond with calmness and compassion, and not with anger." "But, what about the challenge? Should we just ignore it?" "Did their grandmaster issue a challenge in black and white?" "No, it was issued orally by one of his instructors in public." "There you are. If you have responded with calmness and compassion instead of with anger, you would have realized that the instructor does not represent his grandmaster or his school. Besides, he may have made a challenge in a fit of anger, which you should rightly ignore. Even if a challenge is issued, it does not mean you have to accept it." Then my master gave me some invaluable advice, which may paradoxically appear trite until we take time to investigate into its profundity. He said, "Make friends, not enemies. It is easy to get into animosity, but very difficult to get out of it. Do not waste your precious Shaolin arts on quarrels which may loom large and important from a narrow spatial or temporal dimension, but which are actually petty if we view them from a wider perspective. Use the Shaolin arts to help people, to relieve suffering and save lives, worldwide and for all times." ( PP. 209-211 ) The true spirit of Shaolin is further illustrated for us in the following passage, quoted from a text entitled, HOLDING YIN, EMBRACING YANG :- ON THE NATURE OF THE SUPERIOR WARRIOR The ancient sage said, "The great ones planted their virtue, saw their works come to fruition, and then imparted their teachings. In this way, their legacies last forever." That which lasts forever is a part of the Tao, and since the deeds of the sages support the way of the Tao, they are constant and indestructable. The virtue of compassion forms the foundation of the Tao; the virtues of softness and yielding are the functions of the Tao; the virtue of saving the world forms the structure of the Tao; and the method of self-cultivation is the Tao applied to everyday life. Spoken words are used to communicate the principle, and written words are used to record the teachings of the Tao. In speaking and writing about the Tao, the sage is as fearless as a warrior, and being fearless, his legacy lasts forever. To be mundane is to be perishable; to be a sage is to be timeless. The warrior lasts forever because she does not fight with anyone and yet fights with all adversaries. In not fighting, she softens motivation and tames hardness, and puts herself last in order to return to the beginning. In fighting adversaries, he is the fearless warrior and the indefatigable fighter. Embodying the stedfastness of the hero and the power of the conqueror, he is not involved in the petty battle of the common person but fights the battles for countless generations to come. Confucius said, 'The virtuous person is not a common general. The common general is afraid that if he does not fight, he would be considered a coward.' Other Confucian sages have said that a peaceful spirit clear as night is no different from the mind of the sage. If you attain this state of peacefulness, you'll be like Confucius and Yanzi. The Buddhists say that if you embody virtue in stillness, you will be no different from the Buddha. The Taoists say that it is from earth and not sky that immortals Zhongli and Lu come. To be a warrior of the Tao means to surpass those who have lived before us. Let all practioners become warriors of the Tao. Like sages (masters) past and present, be fearless in propagating the way of the Tao. ( PP. 151-152 ) The essence of the above wisdom teaching(s) is distilled for us in the following passages of the Wilhelm/Bates edition of the I Ching:- HEXAGRAM 33 - Retreat THE JUDGMENT Conditions are such that the hostile forces favored by the time are advancing. In this case retreat is the right course, and it is not to be confused with flight. Flight means saving oneself under any circumstances, whereas retreat is a sign of strength. We must be careful not to miss the right moment while we are in full possession of power and position. Then we shall be able to interpret the signs of the time before it is too late and to prepare for provisional retreat instead of being drawn into a desperate life-and-death struggle. Thus we do not simply abandon the field to the opponent; we make it difficult for him to advance by showing perseverance in single acts of resistance. In this way we prepare, while retreating, for the counter- movement. Understanding the laws of a constructive retreat of this sort is not easy. The meaning that lies hidden in such a time is important. THE IMAGE Mountain under heaven: the image of RETREAT. Thus the superior man keeps the inferior man at a distance, Not angrily but with reserve. The mountain rises up under heaven, but owing to its nature it finally comes to a stop. Heaven on the other hand retreats upward before it into the distance and remains out of reach. This symbolizes the behavior of the superior man toward a climbing inferior; he retreats into his own thoughts as the inferior man comes forward. He does not hate him, for hatred is a form of subjective involvement by which we are bound to the hated object. The superior man shows strength (heaven) in that he brings the inferior man to a standstill (mountain) by his dignified reserve. HEXAGRAM 41 - Decrease Thus the superior man controls his anger And restrains his instincts. The lake at the foot of the mountain evaporates. In this way it decreases to the benefit of the mountain, which is enriched by its moisture. The mountain stands as the symbol of stubborn strength that can harden into anger. The lake is the symbol of unchecked gaiety that can develop into passionate drives at the expense of the life forces. Therefore decrease is necessary; anger must be decreased by keeping still, the instincts must be curbed by restriction. By this decrease of the lower powers of the psyche, the higher aspects of the soul are enriched. HEXAGRAM 43 - Breakthrough In a resolute struggle of the good against evil, there are, however, definite rules that must not be disregarded, if it is to succeed. First, resolution must be based on a union of strength and friendliness. Second, a compromise with evil is not possible; evil must under all circumstances be openly discredited. Nor must our own passions and shortcomings be glossed over. Third, the struggle must not be carried on directly by force. If evil is branded, it thinks of weapons, and if we do it the favor of fighting against it blow for blow, we lose in the end because thus we ourselves get entangled in hatred and passion. Therefore it is important to begin at home, to be on guard in our own persons against the faults we have branded. In this way, finding no opponent, the sharp edges of the weapons of evil become dulled. The lesson of "finding no opponent" is, in essence, what GM Wong's Sifu taught him, in the story at the top of this post. Master Leishman use to say that for a superior fist-artist to suffer a defeat of this nature, at the hands of an inferior fist-artist, is the result of deviating from the path of Nature, and cosmic (universal) principle. I feel certain that neither the founder of Aikido, nor the defeated Ki master would care to disagree with this, in the spirit or principle of it.

Hello Yen Hui, You posted, “…the Ki Master failed to realize or actualize the Great Harmony, and therefore could not command the chi.” I agree; he had no business in that match (imo). You posted, “Make friends, not enemies…” Better advice was never given. You posted, “…that for a superior fist-artist to suffer a defeat of this nature, at the hands of an inferior fist-artist, is the result of deviating from the path of Nature, and cosmic (universal) principle.” Perhaps another way to put it is, if you cannot justify it, don’t do it. For example, Sifu Shawn has participated in many competition bouts. He has posted some moments of these and they show his skill. I, on the other hand, have not participated in any competition bouts. I have no business in a match of this kind. This Ki master was showing off (imo) and it cost him. Regards, MrE2Me2

I agree; he had no business in that match (imo) ... This Ki master was showing off (imo) and it cost him. Hi there MrE2Me2, I've been thinking about this match, pretty much since I first saw the clip. However, I never bothered to read any of the viewer's comments, until this morning. Something just did'nt seem right to me about the whole thing; and yesterday, without reading any other comments about it, apart from the few posted on this Forum, I began to feel that maybe the ki master intentionally threw the match, for whatever reason. So I went to the YouTube site just now, and began to read a few of the comments, and it seems others have thought the same thing. I don't know much about Aikido, admittedly, having never practiced it, but I have read a few things about it, and it looks to me like the old master broke all the rules, and conducted himself like a real novice! I'm thinking that perhaps he was somehow forced into this, against his better wishes; and forced maybe to throw the match too. When I see the way Segal, and others like him, of the same style, just throw around the multiple attackers, I find it almost impossible to believe the defeated master was even trying. There's more to this one than meets the eye, I feel. Many kind regards, Yen Hui

Hello Yen Hui, You posted, “…it looks to me like the old master broke all the rules, and conducted himself like a real novice!” I agree, for whatever reason he did. Your idea that he might have thrown the match didn’t occur to me until you said it. But it makes as much sense as anything. Whatever the case, he looks like he caught a nasty injury there. You posted, “There's more to this one than meets the eye, I feel.” Yep! Although, I doubt that we’ll ever know for sure. Regards, MrE2Me2

Hi there MrE2Me2 ~ I just noticed you have attained "Yoda" consciousness! Now the Force will be with you always! So long as you don't fall to the "darth" side! LOL If there was a genuflecting emoticon, I would post it for you, as 'Yoda' is worth at least 3 very low bows, with forehead to the ground! LOL  Many kind regards, Yen Hui P.S. - While we may never learn the truth about the Ki Master, there is no doubt but that in Japan he has suffered a major loss of face over this, and it will probably go down in infamy, as they say. The story of it will out-live him, I'm sure, at least within the Aikido world.

Qi master
Just wondering in any of the people on this forum, if they have ever even experienced a glimpse of qi power in their training? I have seen people put out candles with a punch or swipe of the palm, even I have done this, but I think that this is just speed from my punch creating enough wind to put out the candles. While I don't deny the existence of qi, I find it hard to believe when I see this qi master in his own kwoon take down 20 of his own students and it being filmed (could be for promotion), but when he is challenged from an outsider he gets his butt handed to him. My thoughts on the matter is this, while I do believe in quantum physics, metaphysics, and qi are linked in some way, I think that it takes a master that has spent years getting in harmony with his soul, and I think that it would be hard to find these masters and get them on film as they would probably not be interested in fame or promotion because to reach this state you would probably have left concerns with his ego and other emotions that keep our minds from reaching this heightened link with our soul.

Yen Hui- 12-21-2006

I doubt that we’ll ever know for sure. Hi there MrE2Me2, I found this tiny snippet about it online:- Aikido Grand Master Vs MMA Fighter - Video The Aikido Master, Kiai Master Ryukerin has a 200-0 wins MMA/Vale Tudo, and that he bets 5 grand he can beat any MMA fighter. The beginning of this video has them signing the contracts. The opponent (Youger Guy) is a Karate Black Belt, and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt. I have'nt a clue if it's true, but let's assume for a second that this Aikido GM was actually undefeated, with a MAA/Vale Tudo win record of 200-0!! Does the way he conducted himself in the above match reflect the skill of an undefeated Grandmaster with 200 official wins under his belt? If I was a Japanese "good-fellow", I might just be interested in fixing a fight and forcing the GM to go down. With an undefeated record, the odds against the challenger must be quite high, so the pay-off would be astronomical, in the event that he should actually defeat "the undefeated GM"! But how would (did?) the Japanese mob force the GM to throw the match :?: Hurt a family member, perhaps, or even himself, if he refuses to co-operate? A possible alternative theory, of course, would be that the GM bet against himself, on the sly, perhaps even everything he owned and went down to collect his "secret" winnings! An ugly thought, I admit, so I'm personally inclined to lean heavily toward, or in favour of the first theory! Kind regards, Yen Hui

Hi there Pak Sau, What I posted above offers one theory as to what actually happened in this challenge match. I have never witnessed, "live", anything like we see the Qi master, in question, performing in the video clip. However, I have absolutely no doubt that GM Morihei Ueshiba had such a command of the Qi (Ki/Chi). GM Wong Kiew Kit is another one who has it, imo, and in his book on The Art of Chi Kung, he claims that his Sifu's master could leap over a ten foot fence from a standing-still position; which he attributes to the profound, even sublime mastery of the life-force. However, why we don't see more of these kind of sublime demonstrations is a good question! In my opinion, the public display of such skills attracts more trouble than good. The masses have "selective" vision and hearing, meaning they see and hear only what they want to see and hear. Rarely will they be made to "believe"! So, then, in this light, why would a real Qi master care to command the chi for the irreverent and unbelieving, who'll always think it's "just-another-clever-trick"? Is there any good reason for him/her to do so? And once a true Qi master acquires a public reputation, it's almost a sure bet that this exposure will attract a continuous flow of challengers and egomaniacs, who seek only to test and defeat him/her. For every true Qi master who publically displays his/her power, there's probably at least a dozen-or-so others who chose to keep it concealed, and to only reveal it on the rarest of occasions to their own inner circle of influence. However, like GM Wong states (in the rather long quote I posted above), the proof exists for those who will choose to believe it!! Kind regards, Yen Hui

Hi there MrE2Me2 ~ I just noticed you have attained "Yoda" consciousness! Now the Force will be with you always! So long as you don't fall to the "darth" side! LOL Hi there MrE2me2 ~ Just to clarify, this was a jest in reference to your Avatar, of course, and no offense was intended. Quite to the contrary, it was intended to show respect for your dedication to Moderating this Forum. It is appreciated! My jest, of course, will only make sense to those who have watched the "Star Wars" episodes, and as hard is it is for me to realize at times that not all people have seen them, or care to, I accept the reality that not all have! Kind regards, Yen Hui

Hello Yen Hui, You posted, “Just to clarify, this was a jest in reference to your Avatar, of course, and no offense was intended.” None was taken :-D You also posted, “I accept the reality that not all have!” I hear that…as a matter of fact, I believe it is the T.V. show “Mythbusters” in which one of the hosts makes a humorous comment I echo upon occasion. “I reject your reality and substitute one of my own, instead”.
